Gertie the Golden Girl: Queen of Naps & Snacks

Gertie’s journey to The Sanctuary at Dunn Farms began when a kind neighbor stepped in to ensure she received the care she deserved. Her previous owner had the best intentions when rescuing her from a farmer, but due to health challenges and a diagnosis of dementia, Gertie’s care was often forgotten—sometimes going without food, water, and hay. Thankfully, she found her way to us in 2023, where she now enjoys the love and attention she always needed.

At approximately 30 years old, Gertie is a resilient senior pony who, like many older horses, has been diagnosed with Cushing’s disease. She receives daily medication and a carefully prepared diet of senior feed, supplements, and soaked food to aid digestion and keep her comfortable.

Despite her difficult past and ongoing medical needs, Gertie is a gentle soul with a loving personality. She enjoys spending her days with her donkey friends and has an unexpected best friend—Walter the pig! 🐷💛 Whether she’s soaking up the sunshine or nuzzling up for a treat, Gertie is a true testament to the power of love, care, and second chances
